about

the paper ones (2013) uses the irregularities in papyrus to drive improvisations on wooden instruments. The piece consists of a set of five scores for instruments made of wood including:

1. Wooden wind instruments
2. Pitched wooden percussion
3. Unpitched wooden percussion
4. Fretted wooden string instruments
5. Unfretted wooden string instruments

On each score, aspects of the papyrus's irregularities have been drawn out using ink, creating a surrealistic, nearly hallucinatory score that encourages the performer to question which marks have been added and which they're seeing directly from the paper itself.

This performance features an unfretted wooden string instrument (upright bass) and wooden wind instruments (bass recorder and bassoon).
